Lemongrass is a culinary herb, often used in Thai food and hot teas. It is used both fresh and dried, and imparts a lemony flavor to dishes. Some studies have shown that Lemongrass tea seems to provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and infection-preventing benefits.
Meyer lemon skin is fragrant and thin, colored a deep yellow with a slight orange tint when ripe. Meyer lemons have a sweeter, less acidic flavor than the Eureka lemon usually found in supermarkets. Delicious in any recipe that call for lemon, especially desserts.
A very healthful green to eat when cooked, nettles have a long history of medicinal uses, including treatment of muscle and joint pain. Makes a great ’tisane’ (herb tea) — bright, herbaceous, delicious. They should be handled with care (wear gloves!) when fresh but take very little cooking to shed the sting.
Quince is an ancient fruit originating in the Caucasus and northern Persia, and related to apples and pears. It is high in vitamin C and antioxidants, as well as pectin, making it a great fruit for jams, marmalades, tarts and pies. Though it can be eaten raw, it is usually preferred cooked, either roasted in the oven or diced and cooked down with water or apple juice until becomes a puree or compote. $14 per five pound bag.
Yuzu is a knobby-skinned citrus fruit, with a floral aroma and tangy tart flavor. According to an article in the The New Yorker, “Yuzu is thought to have originated in China, but the fruit is most closely identified with Japan, where it is one of the nation’s essential aromas and flavors. It’s a key ingredient in ponzu sauce, the tangy blend of yuzu juice and soy sauce that often accompanies cold noodles or fried pork cutlets. It also lends zing to highballs, seasons potato chips, and is a favorite flavor for candy.” It can also be ‘staggeringly expensive’ in some areas (like NYC) at $15 to $20 per pound. This mild sweet-tart fruit originated in Ancient Persia and was brought to California by Spanish settlers in 1769. Considered high in anti-oxidants and vitamins C and K, pomegranates are delicious in sauces, dressings and salad, as well as eating fresh.
